IVATT REBUILDS

At the time of Stirling's death there were still twelve boilers for 0-4-4Ts either under construction or ready for fitment.  These were gradually fitted between December 1895 and March 1901, as follows:
Nos. 245 (12/1895), 248 (12/1895), 531 (1/1896), 628 (2/1896), 159 (3/1896), 246 (9/1897), 247 (5/1899), 504 (12/1899), 683 (9/1900), 243 (11/1900), 525 (3/1901), 661 (3/1901).

Further non-standard boilers were ordered under Ivatt, as follows:
BO 501 straightback (1897): No. 629 (6/1898).
BO 512 domed (30/3/1898): Nos. 652 (9/1905), 655 (2/1907), 624 (12/1909), 248 (12/1912), 242 (3/1913)
BO 525 straightback (8/1899): No. 630 (1/1900).
BO 548 domed (20/6/1902): Nos. 765 (7/1904), 936 (8/1904), 659 (12/1906), 762 (2/1907), 694 (3/1908).
BO 583 domed (16/12/1907): Nos. 582 (2/1909), 941 (5/1909), 824 (8/1909), 660 (9/1909),769 (8/1910), 695 (11/1912) .
BO 605 domed (23/10/1911): Nos. 826 (9/1912),  696 (10/1912), 938 (11/1912), 940 (8/1913), 828 (6/1914).

There were also several orders for 4ft-0½in diameter "standard" boilers, destined for 0-6-0 saddle tanks, a boiler design that originated in 1867.  One such boiler was used instead for Class G1 No. 829 (7/1902).

Three of these Class G2 engines were given larger domed boilers, with no change in engine classification: Nos. 652 (8/1905), 655 (1/1907), 624 (12/1909).  These boilers were much longer than the ones replaced and their firebox casings projected well back into the cab.  See also below under GRESLEY REBUILDS.

No. 533 CRANE ENGINE

After its withdrawal in June 1905, No. 533 was converted into a 0-4-4 crane tank engine for use at Doncaster Works and survived until November 1928.  It was given a domed boiler in September 1925.

No. 658 CLASS
IVATT CLASS G3 to G4
LNER CLASS G2

These Class G3 engines were built with 4ft-2½in diameter boilers, so were not given larger Stirling boilers (unlike the preceding Class 120).  Ivatt fitted 4 Class G3 engines with his "standard" 4ft-5in diameter boilers: Nos. 763 (7/1898), 764 (1/1900), 683 (9/1900), 661 (3/1901).

Fig. 121
No. 763 with Ivatt boiler

These engines became Class G4. See also under GRESLEY below.

In addition he fitted 6 Class G3 engines with domed 4ft-2½in diameter boilers: Nos. 765 (11/1904 ), 659 (1/1907), 762 (4/1907), 694 (5/1908), 682 (2/1909), 660 (8/1909).  These engines remained in Class G3.  See also under GRESLEY below.

 766 CLASS
IVATT CLASS G1
LNER CLASS G1

General Plan dwg Q65 (24/1/1906) No. 766 rebuilt with domed boiler.

These engines had been built with Stirling "standard" 4ft-2½in boilers so fitting them with Ivatt "standard" 4ft-5in boilers was a logical step.  But no doubt as tender engines took preference over tank engines, Ivatt only altered one engine: No. 766 (7/1902).  There was no change in classification.  See also under GRESLEY below.
However Ivatt did fit 4 engines with brand new same size boilers, but with domes: 936 (12/1904), 941 (5/1909), 824 (8/1909), 769 (9/1910).  See also under GRESLEY below.
Oddly No. 829 received a brand new straightback 4ft-0½in boiler (same dimensions as Stirling's original "standard" boiler) in October 1902 which it kept until December 1915.  See also under GRESLEY below.
